Doing registry merges manually is not ideal, but if all other options have been tried and you have a copy of your registry file it's worth a shot before trying more destructive options. There are a ton of free tools that contain the option to save/restore your registry, but these don't do any more than you can accomplish on your own by simply going into your registry and exporting it to a copy, or taking a copy and merging it manually. That will restore your registry to a point in time. Next thing to try would be restoring your system to a previous restore point if you haven't turned that option off. You can try rebooting into safe mode and choosing "last known good," this has a slight chance of working for you. You have to have a copy of a good registry in order for any such tools to be effective.
